Generously spread across 350sqm, the apartment spans the average home in scale, becoming its own home in the sky. Starting from an empty and unoccupied shell, the home is imagined and built from the ground up and sees layers of rich and textural diversity sit among more controlled and structural elements.

Feature lighting sits above the dining area as a sculptural addition, drawing the eye upward. Flexibility and grandeur were key to the planning of the home, allowing for large and long gatherings, with entertaining as a key focus.

The central island sees stone wrapped over and down the sides, with aligned accessed joinery from both the front and back – ensuring the overall form remains prominent and monolithic, and the amenity becomes hidden.

Home to its internationally versed and travelled owner, the brief called for a contemporary and understated interior that departed from the traditional design of the area. Wanting to combine local materials in a more refined and heightened manner, the approach uses restraint in bringing the elements together.

A timeless and enduring series of finishes and gestures are integrated throughout to create an anchoring in place, focusing on longevity and avoiding fashion. The combined warmth of neutral hues and textural elements adds subtlety that feels unexpected culturally, and yet is welcomed by the owner and the home they wanted to create.

Needless to say I’ve had kitchens on the brain, and this white and wood kitchen, designed by AKB Design is giving me all sorts of beautiful inspiration. Spotted Gum House by Alexander & Co.


Alexander & Co.’s overhaul of an existing Bungalow on Sydney’s North Shore is the epitome of courageous design, from its scale to material selection, to sustainable practices.

Sydney-based interior design studio Alexander & Co. go beyond just responding to the brief. It is their firm belief that each project – each place –whether it be a residential home or a hospitality venue, has something to say; they call this “the spirit of place”. The spirit of Spotted Gum House is marked by innovation and exploration. The clients themselves played a pivotal role in the home’s forward-thinking sustainable design features, while the Alexander & Co. team explored the tension between what was and what could be.

The house features a double-story rear extension on an early 20th-century bungalow. Each section of the home – the restored front, the new upstairs, and the new downstairs – was designed with a unique architectural language, making the process more streamlined. What we see as a result is a marriage between both traditional and contemporary architecture to create one unified design vernacular.

The ground floor of the rear extension comprises a generous, open communal space with a high-ceiling kitchen, dining and living area. Upstairs on the first floor are the private living quarters, including the main bedroom, steam shower room and built-in infra-red sauna. The home’s original front comfortably houses two guest bedrooms, a study, sitting room, guest bathroom, powder room, and laundry.

Contrasting materials for the floors, ceiling and walls creates variety and movement in the communal space.

The home’s restrained material palette – grey marble, black steel, stained oak and off-white brick – departs from its otherwise unrestrained scale. This comes across not as jarring but rather sensible and balanced. When speaking about the materials, Alexander & Co. director Jeremy Bull notes that they “endeavoured to bring a contemporary Australian architectural language to life with a modernist reference”. The selection of bespoke lighting and furniture, such as the Surface wall sconce by Henry Wilson and the Prime Time leather chair by Tom Stepp for Great Dane, are integral to this dialogue. 

Perhaps the most significant aspect of this alteration was the pivot towards a more environmentally-conscious way of designing and living. Devoted to both personal wellness and sustainability through architecture, the clients were key drivers behind the home’s sustainable features, some of which include: a circadian ‘dim’ lighting system, geothermal climate control, double-glazed windows, and organic low-risk materials. “Each of these components was pivotal in maintaining integrity and excellence within the design,” Jeremy says.

Spotted Gum House by Alexander & Co. is a paragon of timelessness; emerging from the past, built in the present, designed for the future.

Penthouse III by Lawless & Meyerson


An existing double-storey apartment in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is given a dark and moody design treatment by long-term collaborators Lawless & Meyerson and MHNDU.

Lawless & Meyerson director Jo Lawless describes their design intent as ‘dramatic, but liveable’, in an apartment redesign for an international client relocating to Sydney with their two young girls. The brief called for a home that levelled up to the Sydney Harbour locale through exceptional quality and detail.

Taking the home on as a blank canvas, Lawless & Meyerson have carved out a refined interior palette that balances light and shade through metal lacquer, rich chocolate limestone and light grey timber. As Jo Lawless puts it, “light for the kids and dark for the adults”.

The clients wanted a similar colour palette to their previous all-black apartment, but with more balance and contrast with lighter tones. “The client likes black (and so do we), so we used a lot of it,” Jo explains. “The idea was to create a sexy and sophisticated interior that worked well on a sunny day with the light streaming through, and equally well at night looking out over the dark harbour and the twinkling lights.”

The five-bedroom apartment extends across two levels with 180-degree Sydney Harbour views. Downstairs houses four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a study, while the second storey features the living space, dining room and kitchen unfolding onto the terrace, alongside a powder room, guest bedroom and ensuite, laundry and separate family room for the children.

A standout feature, the Boffi CODE kitchen system is concealed behind a full-height black timber wall. “The clients wanted the kitchen to stand alone and didn’t want it to be visible from the lounge or the dining space,” Jo says. The island bench is clad entirely in Pietra Grey marble, including the drawer fronts and stone sink. Wolf appliances and Sub-Zero refrigeration is integrated within full-height cabinetry, in a lustrous lacquered-metal finish.

The dining space features a black Dale Frank painting, Porro Voyage dining chairs, Emmemobili UFO table and the Roll & Hill 2 Globes pendant.

Both levels are connected via a timber staircase, where a statement Dale Frank painting is hung – titled ‘They had a studio room with spa booked usually $150 but because of the virus $130 every Thursday at the Quest, 787 Hunter Street in Newcastle West she would wear a pinafore nightie and he would wear disposable nappies’, 2020.

Lawless & Meyerson called on the glamour of the theatre when designing the ambient powder room.

True to form, furniture pieces by esteemed Italian designers Maxalto, Minotti and Porro are pared-back and considered; right at home next to custom-designed pieces by Lawless & Meyerson. Texture features through unconventional elements like the soft oak flooring and grey stucco lustro render walls, catching and reflecting the light rays beautifully throughout the day. 

Jo says she’s constantly inspired by the understated elegance of a quintessential Belgian home. “I adore everything the designers from that part of the world do,” she says. “Their aesthetic has a sense of glamour about it, but it’s quiet and not flashy; that ‘just right’ balance is what I’m always striving for,” she adds. This balanced aesthetic rings true in the Penthouse III. Lawless & Meyerson have captured the sophistication of Sydney waterfront living, emphasising restraint and craftsmanship over extravagant detail.
