Clinton Hill Townhouse by Ronen Lev | Global Design

Layers of blush and terracotta in the primary bedroom evoke warmth, providing the client with their own sanctuary away from the rest of the home. As for both children’s rooms, Jessica admits these two rooms were the most significant challenge she faced when redesigning the home. “We wanted these rooms to feel like a place the kids would feel comfortable and would want to spend time in,” Jessica says. “We didn’t want them to feel like they were ‘decorated’ but instead a room that would inspire them to feel uniquely themselves,” she adds. With this in mind, Ronen Lev approached these rooms through a playful design lens, selecting soft, rounded furniture and vibrant green and yellow hues.

Spread over two levels, the entry is marked by a sculptural staircase that indicates the point of transition between the levels. While the living level is more open and connected, the upper level houses the guest rooms and has a more modest approach. A palette of white plastered walls and smaller window openings create a more intimate setting and a sense of removal from below.

Pacific Heights by Studio Michael Hilal | Global Design

When Studio Michael Hilal was approached to refresh what would soon become the client’s weekender home, ‘effortlessness’ was a recurring word in the brief. Nestled among a row of pastel-coloured Gothic and Queen Anne townhomes, Michael Hilal and his namesake studio looked to the quintessential terraces in London to refresh the circa-1900 home without losing any of its character. “Reworked London terraces naturally integrate the old and the new so well while retaining their charm,” Michael explains.

With this in mind, much of the ‘old’ remains untouched. While walls have been removed and rooms opened up, each door and moulding detail has been saved and positioned elsewhere in the home, cultivating a contemporary-classic townhouse that still feels distinctly San Francisco.

Old Factory by Arjaan De Feyter | Global Interiors

“We are always looking to balance sobriety in the use of materials on the one hand and the client’s story and personality on the other,” Arjaan says. The Old Factory interiors consider the natural progression of a family home; in particular, the idea that what you see when you first move in versus when you’ve been living there for an extended period of time are two very different things. “You have to leave room for personal interpretation,” Arjaan says. Sober, ‘blank-canvas’ type materials are one way of doing this. Even now, Arjaan says, the alcove in the kitchen is full of photos, kid’s drawings and various lists.

Leinster Square Townhouse by Banda | Global Interiors

Banda creative director and CEO Edo Mapelli Mozzi says the townhouse’s inherent beauty set the tone for a high level of craftsmanship throughout. “The character of the building inspired much of our design intent which hinges on organic textures and organic materials. By working with such a powerful and historic ‘shell’, we could balance it with more contemporary interior design,” Edo adds.

The townhouse spans three levels; the kitchen, dining room, library, living space and ‘snug’ (a small room designed for relaxation) on the ground level, with three bedrooms on the level below and a lower-level cinema room and wine storage. The Obumex ‘Joseph Dirand’ kitchen is the heart of the townhouse, that, in Edo’s words, balances “old and new, hard and soft.”

Villa Apollon by Block 722 | Global Architecture

Lefkada is situated on Greece’s west coast and is easily accessible from the mainland via the Lefkada bridge. The Ionian island is known for its dense forest, waterfalls, historic castles and hiking paths, suited to both the adventure-seeker and those looking for a relaxing Greek island getaway.

Described by the architects as ‘majestic yet humble’, Villa Apollon sits nestled in Lefkada’s rugged hillside of Vasiliki bay and is almost entirely hidden from view. The low-lying, single-storey home is accessed at the rear, revealing views of the cliffs and crystal clear waters immediately upon entry. Three bedrooms, bathrooms and a combined living, dining and kitchen make up the main house, with a further four bedrooms and ensuites in the guest house below.

Casa Tepui by CO-LAB Design Office | Global Interiors

Casa Tepui is split across three levels: a secluded ground floor, a suspended first floor and an open rooftop. The ground floor houses three en-suite bedrooms, each with its own private garden and terrace. Climbing up to the first floor, the kitchen, dining and living area merge into one elongated space, flanked by a swimming pool and terrace. Finally, the rooftop comprises an outdoor dining and lounge area, a barbecue and a jacuzzi. Casa Tepui may be built for two, but it is certainly fit for entertaining.

A select coming together of interesting and sculptural furniture items throughout the home creates a more in-depth narrative in the apartment, enriching the experience. Generously expressed, the open living, dining and kitchen space, although quaint, feels deliberately larger due to lighter tones underfoot and across the vertical surfaces.

Considered indoor planting was also high on Banda Design Studio’s agenda. “Bringing the outdoors in was a pivotal part of the design intent. The olive tree to the left of the fireplace and the ferns positioned carefully in the main living space help lift the aesthetic and improve air quality within the city. Together they bring about an overall sense of wellbeing and harmony.”

‘Heart’ lies at the epicentre of every Banda project, and that’s really where ‘home’ is, after all.

Maui Residence by Walker Warner Architects | Global Interiors

The interiors, Greg says, are designed to feel warm and refined. “The clients didn’t want anything to take away from the setting, so the house is not over-furnished”. In their years together, the couple has collected one-of-a-kind art and furniture pieces, like a pair of vintage Kaspar Hamacher coffee tables.

Walker Warner Architects have designed a home to be cherished by its owners for many years to come.
